Dogs can eat a vegetarian diet with the help of experts, while cats are obligate carnivores. After giving up meat for ethical, health, or environmental reasons, some people want their pets to also participate in a plant-based diet. However, not all pets can eat this way. Pet owners should not change their pets' diet to a completely vegetarian one without the help of an expert, according to Lindsey Bullen, a veterinarian and animal nutritionist in North Carolina, USA. Changing a pet's diet without expert guidance can be harmful to their health. Animal protein that dogs and cats typically eat contains more readily absorbable amino acids than those found in plant protein. If pets are not provided with enough protein, they may lose weight, muscle mass, become weak, have poor digestion, and even suffer from fluid buildup in the chest or abdomen, according to the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. Cats need taurine, an amino acid found in animal protein. If taurine is not properly supplemented in a vegetarian diet, cats can experience impaired nerve function, reproductive issues, and heart disease, Bullen said. Incorrect mineral balance can also have consequences. For example, an incorrect calcium-phosphorus ratio can increase the risk of bone fractures in dogs and cats, as well as slow down the development of puppies or kittens. "A vegetarian diet can be safely applied to both cats and dogs. Meanwhile, a completely vegetarian diet can be safe for dogs, but it is very difficult for cats," Bullen said. Cats are obligate carnivores, so many of their nutritional needs are linked to components found in meat. Therefore, cats need many supplements to create a complete and balanced vegetarian diet. Bullen encourages people to actively participate in adjusting their pets' diets, but also warns against anthropomorphizing them. "Dogs and cats are very different from humans. Your goals for yourself are very good, but we need to keep pets happy and healthy," Bullen noted.
